8 month year old and Cochlear Implant!

One of my passions is working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. My stance on working with individuals who have hearing loss or who are deaf/Deaf is "Pro Communication" this means that I support the family and the patient's decision on communication options. These communication options can range from being apart of the Deaf Community and using American Sign Language (ASL) as their form of communication (beautiful language I might add) to being a verbal communicator and everything in-between - there are many many options!

This video was circulating around Facebook and I thought I would share it! It is one families experience with activating their son's cochlear implant for the first time!

I love this experience for this family! Now that being said this experience doesn't happen for every family. Some children can become overwhelmed and cry, have a different type of reaction when their cochlear implant is turned on or may not react at all.

Cochlear Implants are not for every person or for every family. There is a qualification process where you will work very closely to an Audiologist, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Educator of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. If you have any questions don't hesitate to leave a comment or e-mail me at spiritedspeechpathology@gmail.com!
